R12 is still available, although expensive........but cheaper than a conversion.........."if it ain't broke....don't fix it"!
Don't remember the price but lately I ran across some and it was a lot cheaper than it had been. Seems the demand for 12 has gone way down so that means the prices will trend downwards too. On the other hand, 134 seems to keep going higher and higher.
I think my pig's thong was too tight because she died.....

Well we did it and it seems to work..........The system was totally empty, we pulled a vacuum and let it set for 1 hour on a leak test, it passed the leak test, filled it up with this crap -10% of capacity and it blows cold. Only time will tell, I will post up if it comes back but for now it's working..

    Default R12 vs R134a

    BK,
In addition to a bunch of older cars, including mopars, fords and GM, I have had a '92 Allante and now have a '93. What I can do on the other cars is often lost on the Allante. This car has some odd ball designs and the factory-trained guys seem to have a better grasp of its nuances. As far as the Allante car club membership and my factory trained mechanic knows, the difficulty in the change is definitely the design of the sensor system. The sensor notes the heat difference and will not like the newer stuff's higher temp, so it will shut down the AC system. Even with R12, if it drops just a bit, it gives you a message of "low refrigerant" and shuts off the system. Monday, mine is headed to my mechanic to find wherever the leak is and I will, again, see if he has found an alternate to the R12. He has forgotten more than I'll ever know. If he has come across a solution, I will post it as soon as I can. Don't forget these cars were made from '87 to '93 in the Pininfarina plant in Italy, with parts from 30 differenct countries, but most of the computer design work was done here in around 1982. Even the ride control (advanced for its time) is a pain and the system can't be fooled by bypassing sensors, etc. There are some sharp guys out there and I hope someone finds a good solution before I go to the big cruise in the sky.

Just put Maxi-Frig in my 88 Ramcharger. Pulled a vacuum then installed. So far works great.

Just put Maxi-Frig in my 88 Ramcharger. Had to replace the expansion valve. There was little white looked like plastic bb's clogging the valve. Pulled a vacuum for 30 min. Installed 1 can with stop leak and then 2 regular cans. 1 month later seems to be working great.
