Default throttle sticking on a Holley

New 750 was one of the best things I ever put on that car.

Sorry to hear of you troubles, with the motor and such, but keep plugging away, and you'll have a nice car. Ive been digging the '71s since the mid 80s! I need to start messing with mine, again.

The Holley "replacement" spreadbores DID have a throttle stick problem but DON'T discount them for that, all it took was a simple adjustment that might be done ON THE CAR if ya had the right tools (most people don't). These carbs, In MY opinion, were the best ever replacement for quadrajunks and thermoclunks. Most people don't know they were availiable in mechanical AND vacuum secondaries also.

As with most 4 barrel carbs, the secondary side DOES have an "idle adjustment screw the same as the primary side does, just in a different place. When the secondaries stick on a Holley, it's USUALLY on a motor that has a LOT of vacuum. On the bottom side of the carb, usually only adjustable from the bottom, there IS an idle adjustment screw for the secondaries. Some are into a hole in the baseplate of the carb, others are externally in the secondary linkage assy from the bottom.

In a high vacuum motor, or any motor for that part, if the scondaries are sticking, loosen the screws attaching the throttle plates from the shaft just BARELY, then, turn the throttle shaft adjusting screw about 1 turn in (to open it more), then back it off about 3/4 turn. Make sure ALL the linkage is closed all the way, then retighten the screws that fix the throttle plates to the shaft. test it a few times, if all works well, and it 99% of the time does, reinstall the carb and finish out your adjustment.
Have a Happy, Happy, Holley day, you oughtta be all fixed up after doing this. Good Luck Curt

Okay, so I found a reman mini starter on Ebay and picked it up. When I received it that was the beginning of a 2 week ordeal. Turned out that the old starter had broken the locator snout off and was hanging up when the motor was warm. I didn't know this when I first tried to swap the starter. The new one just wouldn't go in all the way. So the next day I finally figured out that problem. Then when I had time a few days later I tried installing the new starter again after having removed the broken starter snout. Get the new starter installed and everything back together, go to attach the ground to the battery and get a huge spark. Dead short somewhere. New starter has the terminals on top instead of on the side. Turned out that when installed the main positive stud touched the block. So this Saturday I yanked it all apart again and cut 1/2" from the main stud. Reinstalled it again and this time success, the car now starts both cold and more importantly warm. Finally I can move on to another phase of the project and at the same time get to enjoy driving the car which I have now owned for 7 years 4 months.

Most of these new starters have an extension on the wires if you pry that black cap off you can remove it and put wires right on starter.
    Just saying.

Glad your having some success! :-)

This one did not come with an extension. It just managed to have a stud long enough to hit the block right at a freeze plug when installed. It doesn't do that any more thanks to my cutting wheel.

Had been having problems with the carb secondaries not opening, finally got around to reading the manual for adjustment info on the secondary air valve. I think I have it almost dialed in now. So I now have the ability to use even more gasoline when driving. Yeah.

Its nice your wife is there to get all these pics. I don't mean to jump the gun, but didn't see anywhere what color you were planning to paint it when you get to that point. Is your replacement dash black? That gives you more color combo options.

I will be pulling the dash and painting it when I get a chance. Paint scheme will be a two tone blue. Not going to happen for a while though, between surgery this year and trying to get the engine for my wife's 1960 Dart Seneca rebuilt no money.

Can't wait to see it. I'm going to keep following this thread. I'm not even in a position to have a Mopar to work on right now so just living vicariously (I think that's the right word) through others. I hope the surgery isn't too serious & best wishes for a quick recovery.

Was gall bladder removal, done back in March. Recovery went fine, just have to pay all the people involved and that always seems to take all your money and a long time.

So after a short stint with Flickr I cancelled my account there. They are free, but limit you to 200 photos before they start hiding the older ones. I don't want to pay for an account so I deleted everything and closed the account. Still looking for a place that has both free and unlimited photo hosting.

After checking around I found what I hope is a site I can be happy with.
