Hello, guys I am back with a few questions. That being said I am trying to sell my 68 Coronet and on my consideration list is a 78-79 Magnum for something as more daily driver friendly (my car has 4 wheel drums and manual steering and no A/C). That being said I am wondering how the fuel economy is on these cars. I think I get right around 20 hwy with my Coronet and it has a mild 318 and 2.76 highway gears. I have a 1406 edelbrock with an electric choke in my possession. Was wondering how hard is it to convert from the Lean Burn. Any models without Lean Burn. Just wondering what the $2k to $4.5k range would buy in a Magnum? My biggest thing is cruise control and air conditing that works and no rust and a really nice car. Trying to remember if cop car wheels would work with the AMC caps if I want the GT look? Thank you.

Hey Magnumminded. I'll let others confirm this, but I think 20 is about the max. for highway MPG, under ideal circumstances. I have not owned a small block late B, so I'll let others confirm that. Back when i was in college, and the double-nickle was the law of the land, by 400 powered Cordoba with 2.76 axle could get a solid 17/18 or more MPG on the highway. I'm sure I wouldn't be near that running 70+ MPH today.

That magnum is going to weigh more than you Coronet, not only because of the comfort items you mentioned like cruise and a/c, but these cars also carry a heavy impact bumper system, and are lined in sound insulation. All nice, but heavy. The LeanBurn to MP ignition conversion is a pretty simple one. You are going to love the 11.75" front disc brakes, especially compared to your old 4 wheel drums.

Thanks Dave for the input. Most of my driving will 55-60 mph as that is the speed limit of most roads here maybe 65-68 on the interstate. As for the weight that doesn't bother me. That sounds good on the brakes. I miss the discs I had on my LRE truck and Dakota Convertible.

Hi MM. It would be best to locate one w/a 318. I've had those get 20+ at times, used to have a 78 GT w/318, 2.7 gears would do over 20 w/o much "effort" on my part.

Matter of fact, there's a low mileage 79 XE w/318 on Ebay now. Nice clean car too.

360's can get close and go over, when I take either of the 360 cars I have to Carlisle, driving 70 mph most of the time, up those WVa/Va hills and still get 20. But that's open highway too.

Ideal would be a 318 car w/the 360/400 axle, (2.4) If you're seriously looking, PM me.

I had several R-body police (similar to Magnum cars) E58 360's w/3.23 rear, and mileage was lousy, averaging about 10-12 local, but up to 18 highway trip.

Keep in mind that today's "gasoline" is loaded with ethanol, so mileage will suffer even more today than it did 10 years ago.......

Conversion to electronic is simple, but try to get an older nos Mopar kit, as the newer ones have a bad reputation for failure!!

I'm getting around 17 mpg, and was feeling pretty happy about it til I started reading about everyone else getting 20+. The 4 bbl probably gives up some mileage, and mines a 360, not a 318. It seems to be about on par with my V6 truck tho, so I'm not too disappointed.
Can I be frank with you?
Alright. Who should I be then?

matter of fact, I do. Sitting in the garage. Interested?

Assuming somebody wants it and it sells, a new member here has an Arrow I am interested in and the remainder of the money would go towards getting a daily driver on the road along with some basic bills.

Arrow would be a fun little runabout, no?

Thank you everyone. Well, I'll see what happens. I am in the process of selling of my 68 Coronet so I need to move that first. That being said a 360 would be okay. As for the 79 300 they're okay but, honestly I like the fronts on the Magnums over the Cordobas and 300s. But, we'll see what happens. Bill, I seen that 318 car on Ebay it does look nice if it can be had for cheap enough. The other vehicle I'm looking at is a Dakota Convertible as well so we shall see. I almost partial to the Dakota Convertible because of the TBI.

call me crazy ( and most do, regardless) btu I always thought a 300 with a Magnum header panel on it would make a neat amalgamation. A Magnum 300, if you will. Maybe some wheel flares, quarter glass inserts.

                        something like this, mebbe...

with maybe a little nod to this.....

Love the white Magnum. Beautiful car! Well, the Coronet is sold and hopefully the title paperwork will be done this week. Looking at other prospects and not seeing a ton for $4k-5k in decent shape thus far.
